The Futurist magazinehttp://www.wfs.org/futurist.htm published their “Outlook 2010” this month with forecasts in ten domains. Somehow none of the areas focus exclusively on cities or architecture, despite the fact that the world for the first time in history is now more urban than rural.
In fact, I would call this the urban century. One of the most critical issues we are facing is how to live in and create great cities.
No doubt, historically there are times when cities were truly spectacular – Athens, Rome, Rome again, Florence to name a few. They pulsed with culture, commerce, and a sense of community.
Then technology aided industrialization and automobiles, and now globalization and social networking. Cities are simply more complicated now. Actually that’s true about life all the way around.
Yet, even now, sometimes we build something brilliant. New York City’s Central Park, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Sydney Opera House, Beijing Olympics. At a particular moment, communities create genius in built form. Even with all the forces that tear us in multiple directions, it’s possible.
Lifting ideas from The Futurists’ prognostications and modifying them for 21st century communities, here are ten forecasts that will shape cities. I added comments in italics.
Environmental
1. Colorful Solar Energy: MIT devised thin solar film that amounts to paint so translucent it can do double-duty as tinted windows.
2. Flooded Coastal Cities: If we see 14 degrees centigrade warming, the oceans would rise 75 meters, which puts every coastal city at risk. Actually, I would modify this to far lower figures, say 2-6 meters, based on research, but still with devastating possibilities.http://bit.ly/2ZeePC Heavier storm patterns will also increase damage, including risks to river cities.
Government
3. Local Fragmentation. Local governments will exert more influence than national governments. Brookings Institute notes that fragmented metropolitan regions with multiple small municipalities damage the area’s ability to collaborate and attract jobs.http://bit.ly/bTdl6
4. China’s Ascent. China, maybe Russia, will join the US as leading world powers by 2025. As the EU gains a unified voice, it will become a member of this group.
Habitats
5. Healthy Cities. Cliff Moughtin, Urban Design, cites urban gardens and walkability as improvements to quality of life. Example: Freiburg, Germany.http://bit.ly/3TaRFE I would add the slow cityhttp://bit.ly/4hshXh and new urbanist movements.
6. Car-Free Cities. Electronic sensors in Singapore charge cars as they enter the city. Paris aims to cut auto traffic by 40% by 2020, replaced with bikes.
7. Suburban Woes. As energy costs soar, districts with spread-out services will spend more in transportation. That is, unless they build public transit and infill to create density, and address problems of aging infrastructure and next-generation residents as urban cores have learned.
Health and Medicine
8. Sensors and Nano-technology. Health monitoring and even minor diagnosis and procedures will be done virtually, placing an additional duty on houses, especially bathrooms and kitchens. Furthermore, hospitals will be modified accordingly, shrinking examination rooms and beds while adding clinics.
Information Society
9. Augmented Reality. Sensors, digital maps, and real-time data combine with social media to enrich our experience of cities.http://bit.ly/1y7rqI
10. Telecommuting. US jobs filled by telecommuters could increase four-fold to 19 million by 2012. That many folks may have partial telecommuting in two years. Reduced road infrastructure could save $5 billion and we’d recapture 1.5 billion commute hours. Changes to cities without rush-hour commuting would be enormous. Residences become base-camps for work and living, and neighborhoods – urban or suburban – become 24/7 communities.
That’s ten changes that apply to cities from the first five areas that The Futurist covered. They had many other points under these headings; I selected based on relevancy to cities.

What I like about Jonathan’s method is that it is more of a conceptual framework that can be adopted for my own purposes rather than a precomposed framework that locks you into someone else’s way of coding. Totally agree. I was a real estate investors (err, an amateur real estate investor) for years, and the returns are so much higher with websites, especially since it takes a lot less time. Plus everything can be outsourced – yes, you can “outsource” work in real estate, but not as cheaply as with internet marketing. That’s why I switched. Great post.

Thanks for the tips! Actually, she only gets aggressive if she is allowed to play with other dogs. And yes, if I react to an off leash dog approaching us. My college advisor used to work for NASA designing instrument panels so that astronauts would notice important warning lights and signals. Those are things I sure wouldn’t want to miss if I were in outer space. When you think about it, there is quite a bit of complexity in making sure we notice things like traffic signals, buttons on intrument panels, etc.
Cardio plan is up to you on this particular plan. I am focusing more on outside runs on the boardwalk and sand. In the gym I will be using more of the bike, stairmaster, and elliptical for cardio with a focus on endurance. Outside runs will continue to be interval based.

Cedar Grove is an excellent choice of towns to live in. They don’t have a train, but you can drive to the new NJT station at MSU which has plenty of parking. Their schools and community are good and they have a tradition of keeping property taxes in check. I think the Newark reservoir (located in town) might help with this as well. If we didn’t need the train and the shorter commute to the city, I would be all over it. If I was a bachelor, I would probably do Clifton over it, but that is Captain Cheapo talking.

Thanks for your comment, Liz. I’m not aware of any campaign to get clopyralid out of gardening products, but I will ask around and see if anything is being considered. It seems there are two options: a campaign that ‘forces’ the withdrawal of clopyralid, or one that raises awareness of this chemical resulting in it being withdrawn because no one is buying products with it in – so market forces do some of the leg work. But it all needs to be part of a bigger conversation that leads to a complete rethink on how we care for our lawns in a much wider environmental context.

I hope to up that to 9 total tomorrow as my gut flora seems fine with the 8. Praise God for this healing! Now I have hope of actually eating some Thanksgiving turkey.

he would have to stay in the kitchen next time he is left alone. He goes frantic in there, scratched the door to pieces, barks, whines, pees etc, I hate having to leave him alone, but there are times when he has to be left alone. I have been told to buy a crate and train him to go in there, but have my doubts if this will work. He is fine in the car, loves sitting on back shelf, but can’t or won’t leave him in car for very long.

that is kind of cool! doing yoga on the beach… lekker man! when we were on holiday in march down there i saw guys doing karate one morning on the beach, there is just something about the beach and then seeing something like that… discipline and nature, quite cool.i have never done yoga, do they give out free weed at the end of the class?

I’ve never used Proactiv before, but the new campaign has really caught my attention. The Be Proactiv campaign is interesting and I’m a huge fan of Katy Perry. I’m Proactive because I’m trying to be a good role model for my boys. I take care of myself by working out and eating healthy. I try to model environmentally responsible behavior. And I’m finishing my degree.

I really love the look of that bag and want one for myself. One small problem, I have tried to figure out how much 0.5 yard is…? Google and conversion tables tells me its around 45cm and I am guessing that is the length of the fabric? How wide does the fabric have to be as most fabrics have a different range in width size.
